Home Theater Systems Installation

The goal of a home theater (home cinema) is to set the stage for the reproduction of a motion picture in the manner a filmmaker intended. We are here to remove the obstacles hindering that perfect reproduction.

Home Theater Home Cinema

Each room poses challenges and our experience allows us to work through those challenges to bring you a spectacular presentation of film and music. When the lights dim and the movie begins, you and your family will be pulled into the film from beginning to end, in the same way you experience it in a theater, only better.

Room Treatment

Room Treatment

The ideal setting is a designated room with darkened, acoustically treated fabric to prevent light reflection and audio reflections where unintended. We choose acoustically transparent fabrics that allow the sound to be treated, while keeping the light reflection to a bare minimum. Darkening the room creates a better contrast ratio for a more 3 dimensional image.

The use of controlled lighting and a screen with a large enough viewing area to cover most of your peripheral vision will enhance your viewing experience. The same attention to detail yields similar for sound.

An acoustically treated room and a perfectly equalized sound system allows the soundtrack of a film to further captivate your senses and creates a deeper sense of immersion.

Display Devices

LED Display Device

Your home theater will receive a display device; either front projector for larger venues or a direct display device such as a Plasma or LCD.

Those display devices are then calibrated for perfect color reproduction and accurate grey scale for a precise image.

This also increases the contrast ratio between black and white which yields a more vivid image.

Front Projector Screens

Front Projection Screen

The choice of screen for a front projection system is also very important since it will address many factors. The questions that need to be addressed range from ambient light to the type of projector.

This will determine whether a grey screen will be used to boost contrast, or a 1.3 gain will be used in a light controlled environment to create more color uniformity. The use of high gain screens, or high power screen is yielding impressive results for obtaining large, bright images from non commercial projectors where light output is always a challenge.

We also do systems with acoustically perforated screens, so the speakers can be lined in a perfect array behind the screen for incredible sound localization on screen. Voices coming from the screen is something that captivates commercial movie goers, and is the perfect way to go in a residential set up too. Curved screens can also be used for maximum light output.

Front Projectors

Front Projector

Each configuration will be room and equipment dependant, and we are there to assist in making the right choice. The new projectors are based on various technologies, and they each have their own strengths.

We carry DLP technology based on Texas Instruments as well as DILA developed by JVC, yielding up to 4k resolution. For high light output requirements, we have 3 chip DLP units that are true light cannons, yet accurate with great contrast and black levels.

We don't feel that one requires the most expensive components in order to achieve this level of immersion into a film. Only a well planned theater with well-balanced components and the desire to work with the space to recreate a cinema setting within the comfort of your own home.

Sound

The foundation of a home theater is the surround sound processor. This can be a receiver, where the amplifiers are built in, or separate surround sound processor and separate amplifiers, which is the better route to go for better sound separation.

A home theater is built around that component.

The surround sound processor is essentially the brain of the entire system. It receives all the audio and video signals from the Blu-Ray player, satellite boxes, music devices and it decodes them for the amplifiers. Surround sound processors decode formats such as Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital EX, DTS, DTS ES, the new lossless HDMI 1.3a carried formats like Dolby True HD, DTS Master HD. They also convert the digital output from your music player to analog so the amplifiers can amplify the sound for the speakers. A good surround sound processor needs plenty of processing power so it can quickly decode and steer the sound to the appropriate speakers. Processors also apply filters such as THX to smooth out the harshness in certain movie tracks.

These days, surround sound processors also apply custom equalization programs based on readings we take of the room so that room resonances and dips can be corrected to create a flat, linear response curve for a perfectly balanced sound presentation. Gone is that fastidious, boomy bass, replaced by a taut, fast and accurate, chest pounding bass. Most high-end systems consist of the main left and right speakers that present the stereo music soundstage.

A center channel is placed in between to handle dialogue. Sound effects pan from left to right using all three speakers. Side speakers are placed directly to the sides of listeners to assist in carrying the panning sound to the rear of the room. The rears are the surround effects speakers and work in conjunction with the sides for a 7 channel surround field. Placement is the key to yielding a credible presentation. The .1 in 5.1 or 7.1 implies the low frequency effect, or subwoofer. You can even have multiple subs for a 7.4 system. The more subs used in a system, the better the response curve will be since the additional subwoofers cancel out energized room nodes and additional resonance.

Some surround processors also process video, mainly up-scaling to 1080p for the highest resolution on screen. It can also address color correction, contrast issues, gamma curves and many more features. Depending on the display device, we sometimes prefer a surround processor that bypasses video and lets the display handle all video processing. Once the signal has been received, decoded, re-equalized by the surround processor, the signal is then sent out in analog format in single ended RCA or balanced XLR to the amplifier. One cable per input for each speaker. So the amplifiers now receive all signals for left, center, right, left side, right side, surround back left, surround back right and one goes to the subwoofer. That can then be split additional times for multiple subs. The amplifiers then amplify the signal for the loudspeakers to reproduce. These reproduced levels are carefully and equally calibrated for a uniform and time delayed effect for a perfect sense of envelopment.

Various speaker types must be considered for each installation. One can have full range 4 way or 3 way floor-standing speakers. The former reproduces all frequencies to the lowest order. 3 way is the most common and can reach all but the lowest of frequencies, which can be handled by a subwoofer. The center channel must be matched to the main speakers for timbre matching to maintain a uniform sound field. When sound pans from left to right for example, you want it to be seamless. So mixing and matching equipment falls short of allowing this effect. Speakers can also be wall mounted for truly stealth installations that disappear. They can be painted to match the decor of the house and yet yield astonishing results. Very dynamic, high output and clear soundstages can be produced by hidden, in wall speaker systems.

The equipment will be chosen to match your listening tastes. Some people desire a very musical speaker that is more delicate and nuanced, while other people prefer a more dynamic, theater oriented high output speaker system. The range has common ground that we can help you identify. Our product line covers the full spectrum. These well balanced cinemas sound so good, that you will spend hours listening to your music collection in 7.4 surround sound, discovering your music in a way you never experienced before.

Our Process

At the end of the day, all these complexities are left to us to put in order, so that (thanks to our control systems integration) you can pick up your remote, push one button and be immediately immersed in a captivating world of cinema and music.

DHA provides the most high-end, yet sensibly priced brands available on the market such as Martin Logan, Anthem, Paradigm, Velodyne, Parasound, Canton, Niles, B&K, Marantz, Onkyo, Panasonic, Sonos, JVC Professional, Panamorph, Cineak, Projection Design, RTI, Equitech, Krell and many more.

After evaluating your needs and establishing your goals, we assess your home. We subsequently design a home theater system within the constraints of your physical space and budget in order to bring you the closest cinematic experience as intended by the original filmmaker. We follow guidelines established by Imaging Science Foundation ISF, Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) and many of the audio basics that started from THX and have since evolved into complex digital system guidelines. These guidelines bring you closer to a true film experience by yielding the most pristine image quality and sound possible to truly immerse you.

Every installation is custom, integrating seamlessly with your architecture and interior design, giving you a system that is clean and as unobtrusive as possible.

Price Range

Systems can range from as little as US$ 7,000.00 on up to complex, full blown installations in excess of US$ 500,000.00.
